Local 1102 Members Wins Split Shifts at Saks Local 1102 members recently won an important issue at New York's Saks Fifth Avenue when an arbitrator ruled that the department store violated the workers' RWDSU contract by scheduling "split shifts" for workers in the Ladies Shoe department. A split shift is when workers clock in and work part of their shift only to clock out for several hours before returning to work to complete it.
The dispute over the practice began when Saks announced that it would be scheduling workers for split shifts in conjunction with a sale at the famous retailer. The workers saw the inconvenience this would present to them and immediately filed a grievance. From the onset the union argued that split shifts were a violation of the workers' contract with Saks because the agreement requires that the employees' hours are to be consecutive. The arbitrator agreed. "This is a great victory for Local 1102 and the associates in Saks' Ladies Shoe department," said Gil McGarvey, chief steward at Saks Fifth Avenue and a Local 1102 Executive Board member. "We had supervisors telling people to leave, go see a movie, and come back to work. Now Local 1102 members won't have to put up with that," he added. |
