Contract Victories at Stony Brook University Food Service Workers and Cooks who are employed by Chartwells, Inc. at Stony Brook University in Long Island, New York, won new collective bargaining agreements to end their school year on a high note. The members there prepare and serve food at campus cafeterias and restaurants. Both contracts were hard fought and led by strong negotiating committees from each respective unit. Negotiations centered on the escalating costs of medical insurance. The new contracts not only protect those benefits, but also provide for above industry standard wage increases, strengthened grievance procedures, voluntary member contributions to the RWDSU Committee on Political Education, and enhanced incentives for longevity. Local 1102 President Frank Bail said, "These contracts were not achieved by accident. The members at Stony Brook were unified and their employer knew that. As a result, the members will continue to work under some of the best contracts in the industry." |
