Gate Gourmet Workers Awarded $400,000 in Largest Settlement in Local 1102 History

Employers must abide by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. That was the message sent by Local 1102 to Gate Gourmet, an employer who provides food and beverages for passengers on both airlines and Amtrak trains.

Through their hard work and dedication, Local 1102 members earned bonuses for helping the company adjust to conditions in the airline industry after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The company told the workers that they had earned the largest bonus ever at LaGuardia, Kennedy, and Hartford airports as well as three Amtrak locations: Albany, Sunnyside, and Penn Station.

The company then went back on its word. Members were told that Gate Gourmet would only pay out these bonuses at 25% of what was owed. Local 1102 filed arbitration and won a decision that demanded all monies owed be paid out immediately. The award, which has amounted to $400,000, is the largest in Local 1102 history. The full payments were made during February and March.

Frantz Vieux, shop steward at Gate Gourmet and a member of the Local 1102 Executive Board, said, "The members at Gate Gourmet are very happy that the union fought so hard to secure this money provided for in our Collective Bargaining Agreement."
