Flying Foods Workers Vote YES for Local 1102

Over 240 workers at Flying Foods at Newark Airport, New Jersey became members of Local 1102 RWDSU, when they overwhelmingly voted 131 to 81 favor of Local 1102 representation. Local 1102 is already the bargaining unit for the airline caterer's JFK Airport location, which spurred employees in Newark to organize for strength.

With the prospect of a union contract and all of the protections that union membership brings, the victory has brought a renewed spirit and sense of unity. "We've seen how Local 1102 has helped our brothers and sisters at JFK, and are excited that we will have the opportunity to sit down and negotiate with management," said Linda Encinas, a member of the organizing committee.

The workers were anxious for representation and worked tirelessly to secure a strong victory, sending a clear message to the management of Flying Foods: They were tired of the harassment, favoritism, and unsafe and unfair working conditions. In addition, many workers had not received wage increases that had been previously promised.

Frank S. Bail, president of Local 1102, welcomed the union's newest members saying, "We congratulate workers at Flying Foods Newark and thank them for choosing our union for representation. They fought hard and we will work with them for a fair contract that protects their rights and ensures dignity at their place of work."
