The Local 1102 Empowerment Program is a bold, new strategy to strengthen our Union through Collective Bargaining, Organizing, and Political Action. A key part of the program is increasing member activism, through better education and communication. Collective Bargaining: Protecting and Improving our Wages and Benefits In the industries we work in, non-union workers are likely to have no health or pension benefits at all. Many Local 1102 members would have to pay between $400 and $800 a month for equivalent health benefits from a private health insurer. And on average, union workers earn 36% more than non-union workers. But with the cost of healthcare skyrocketing and a weak economy, our union must have the strength needed to protect what we have and fight for better contracts. Organizing: Building a Larger, More Powerful Union With numbers comes power. That's why we must organize more workers to join Local 1102. Non-union jobs are a drag on our wages, benefits and working conditions. But when we increase members in a given industry or geographic area, all of our members benefit from greater power at the bargaining table. Politics: Increasing Our Political Power We cannot allow anti-worker interests to threaten our livelihoods. Important decisions are made every day at the State Capitol, in Washington and at City Hall that affect the lives of Local 1102 members. Political power is key if we are to make a difference in the lives of working people. Empowering Our Members Local 1102 exists to benefit its members and their families A central part of the Empowerment Program is enhancing programs in member communications, training and education, and building the involvement and activism of members. |
