Working families and their Unions have mounted a massive grassroots campaign to get out the vote on Election Day and elect candidates who will work to provide quality healthcare, a secure retirement, good jobs and good schools. All Union members have a responsibility to themselves, their families and their communities to educate themselves on the issues and cast their votes for candidates that will fight for the interests of the working people. Labor Unions need to invest time and money into politics and legislation today to counter the influence that corporations and wealthy special interests have. Corporate special interests are trying to drown out the voices of working families across the nation.

Special business interests spent $710 million in comparison to the $62 million spent by the labor movement. But the labor movement is fighting back with people power and education about the issues. Working families are urging legislators to improve life for their families.

The labor movement's agenda calls for affordable healthcare and prescription drugs, better wages and benefits, a stronger and fairer unemployment insurance system, election reform and corporate accountability to name a few. The labor movement's political program is built on members contacting each other personally to educate each other on what is at stake in elections and increasing the Union member vote. The work that was done by Unions throughout the year meant that Union members learned about the issues and candidates through Union publications, mailers and phone calls. The more times Union members were contacted about issues, the more support there was for pro-working family candidates.

The labor movement's political program engages Union members in the political process, to build a government that is more responsive to their needs. The program has successfully increased voting turnout among Union members and has helped shape the issues. More importantly, the labor movement's political program guarantees that by working together, working people can have the strongest possible voice in American politics.

As Union members we must stay aware of the issues, contact our elected officials regarding issues important to us, volunteer, attend Union meetings and rallies and have an active voice in the political process. Remember, whatever it is you do - whether it be working a phonebank, leafleting, speaking with other Union members and most importantly, voting - all of our efforts will pay off in the future by helping to elect people who will fight for, and with, us.
