This year we were proud to partner with Jocelyn's Operation Holiday Spirit to bring holiday cheer to students at Uniondale School District. Thanks to Modell's Sporting Goods Local 1102 helped fulfill the Christmas wishlists of the least fortunate students in the district. Students received warm clothes and gifts from their lists on a year they otherwise may not have had presents to open. The smiles on the faces of the boys and girls at Uniondale School District showed just what the Holiday season is all about!
Inditex, the parent company of ZARA, received the 2016 Human Rights Award from the Jewish Labor Committee. Inditex was chosen for the award because of ZARA's partnership with Local 1102 that has brought a union voice to its Manhattan retail workers.
“Everyone at Zara has been and must be respectful regardless of workers’ background, culture, race, religion, gender or sexual orientation,” said Pablo Francesch, head of global employment and labor relations at Inditex, who accepted the award.
“It is a true honor for Zara, for me personally, for my family, and all of our U.S. team to receive this award on human rights,” Francesch said. “I am especially proud to receive it from an organization that has continuously been fighting against the worst curse of the 20th century, Nazism, and which is still working now for real lasting peace between different cultures and religions.
However, sustainable global companies must continue this work, especially focusing on labor rights, decent work and salary, freedom of association, collective bargaining rights and diversity promotion, for achieving a world with real equal opportunities.”
After most Zara employees in Manhattan stores signed cards saying they wished to be represented by Local 1102 of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, the company agreed to recognize the union and negotiate a contract. The agreement covers more than 1,000 Zara workers involved in a variety of tasks from greeting customers and stocking shelves to running fitting rooms and selling.
Last week Local 1102 held a Health Awareness fair for our members at Flying Foods JFK. The day gave members a chance to access no cost health services directly at their work site. The health fair included vision screenings, flu shots, blood pressure testing, and mammograms. Local 1102 was happy to coordinate the event to provide members with a chance to improve their well being. Thank you to all who volunteered and participated!
This past Tuesday, September 27th Local 1102 Shop Stewards and Union Activists came together to learn ways to improve their leadership and representational capacities. Leaders in your workplaces were addressed by Union officials and labor attorneys to gain a better understanding of their role in the labor movement. Stewards and activists also completed courses that will enable them to be more effective at grievance handling and contract negotiations. We enjoyed a great day of building solidarity across our Union family!

This year, the UFCW International is hosting its first annual Labor Day art contest. The aim of the contest is to celebrate working people by the art of working people.
Each year, we celebrate Labor Day as a way to honor all working people and their contributions to our country and the middle class. Our international union, the UFCW, consists of workers in many, diverse workplaces including retail and grocery stores, meatpacking and processing plants, and more.
The contest: UFCW members and their children are eligible to submit an original work of art. The winner will have their artwork framed and displayed at the D.C. Labor Fest and be awarded a $500 Visa gift card! Two runners up will receive $50 gift cards as well.
In order to enter the contest, please send a high resolution photo of your artwork to the UFCW at http://www.ufcw.org/contest/ with an emphatic theme about Labor day. The deadline to submit your piece is Thursday, August 25, and the winners will be announced on Monday, August 29.
This is an opportunity to showcase your creative skills and show how you feel about Labor Day. Good luck, and we can't wait to see what you can do! More information below.
The UFCW is asking for Local 1102 members' input on issues that matter to you. Those issues will be drafted by UFCW President Marc Perrone into letters to both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump so that they can address your concerns directly. We know our Union Family is stronger when we all voice our opinions together.
We understand that we may not all share the same political beliefs or preferences for candidates – but that’s what makes us strong! We take pride in being a diverse union family and value it as a strength, not a weakness. This is your election, and whatever your political affiliation, you deserve to know how the candidates feel about your concerns.
Visit www.ufcwaction.org/voice between August 1st and August 12th to submit your comments. Your input will make up a letter sent to both Presidential Candidates on August 17th.
Responses from the campaigns will be posted on the UFCW Action website for all to see. To receive an alert when it’s posted, don’t forget to submit your contact information with your comment.
